The distillery buildings on Grattan Quay, reflected in the River Suir

The distillery stands on Grattan Quay, on the River Suir, in the city of Waterford in Ireland's south-east.

About Waterford

A city written by water

Three rivers gathered here long before merchants recognised their value. The tide entered the estuary long before the first ship sheltered beneath Hook Head. Nature built the harbour; commerce built the city around it.

For more than eight centuries Waterford has welcomed the wider world: Vikings and Normans, French wine merchants, Spanish traders and Portuguese captains, engineers, brewers and distillers. And now, people who come to understand its whiskey.

Places in the story

Walk the quays

The places that shaped Waterford are still here: some in the city around us, one at the mouth of the estuary.

  • The rivers

    The Suir

It has already touched the mountains of Tipperary when it passes the quays. Tomorrow it reaches the Atlantic.

  • The estuary

    Hook Head

Where the estuary finally gives itself to the Atlantic, and where generations of ships first sought shelter.

  • The city

    Reginald's Tower

Its stone walls stand at the end of the quays and catch the first light over the river.

  • 15th century

    The Mayor's Wine Vault

Built by the Rice family, one of Ireland’s finest surviving medieval wine cellars, cool limestone beneath the city.

  • The crossing

    Rice Bridge

Stand on the bridge and watch the Suir on its way to the sea.

  • The distillery

    Grattan Quay

Where we make Waterford Irish Whiskey, and where your visit begins.
